Loving Your Dance Friends Well

February 1, 2026
February gives us a natural opportunity to talk about love.

At Smartt Steps, we see love show up in beautiful, practical ways every single week.
It looks like little dancers walking into class with valentines for their friends. It sounds like giggles in the lobby and whispered encouragement before someone steps on stage. It feels like a teammate squeezing your hand during awards and saying, “You’ve got this.”

Dance is hard work. Long rehearsals. Sore muscles. Competition weekends. Nerves before performances. When young people move through that kind of effort together, something deeper begins to form.

Friendship.

And not the surface kind.

The kind that shows up.

We saw it when one of our dancers was cast in a school play. Several of her teammates showed up in the audience to cheer her on. They did not have to be there. They wanted to be there.

We saw it in an even more powerful way this year. After nationals, one of our dancers faced a major surgery and was unable to leave her home for weeks. Her teen company teammates decided she should not miss out on the joy of performing. They recreated Hamilton in full costume and performed the entire show in her living room.

Hours long. Every number. Every scene.

That is what it means to be a dance family.

Those kinds of relationships are not accidental. They are built through shared effort, shared goals, and shared growth. When dancers train side by side, push through challenges together, and celebrate each other’s wins, deep friendships form.

So how can we continue loving our dance friends well?

Here are a few tangible ways our Smartt Steps families model that kind of love:
  • Cheer loudly for every dancer. Whether it is your child on stage or someone else’s, every performer deserves encouragement.
  • Write notes of affirmation. A quick message of support can mean more than you realize.
  • Show up outside the studio. Attend the play, the game, the recital. Friendships matter beyond dance.
  • Celebrate effort, not just outcomes. Hard work, courage, and growth deserve recognition.
  • Speak kindly in the lobby and on the sidelines. Our dancers are always listening.

At Smartt Steps, excellence matters. Strong technique matters. Growth matters.

But so does love.

When we intentionally build a culture of encouragement and support, we raise dancers who are not only skilled, but compassionate and confident. That is the kind of community we are proud to cultivate.

And it is one worth celebrating this February.
