Why Summer Is the Perfect Time to Start Dance
March 31, 2026
If your child has never taken a dance class before, summer is the best time to begin.
We hear it often from parents. “We are curious, but we are not sure if my child will like it.” “It feels like a big commitment.” “We do not know where to start.”
That is exactly why we design summer the way we do.
At Smartt Steps, summer classes are intentionally built to be a low barrier entry point. They are shorter in length. They require less long term commitment. They give families the opportunity to try dance without feeling locked into a full season.
If your child has always wanted to try hip hop, a two day workshop is a simple way to see if it sparks excitement. If ballet feels intriguing but a full year seems overwhelming, summer allows space to explore without pressure. Dancers can experience different styles, meet different teachers, and discover what feels like the right fit.
Summer is about exploration.
It is about giving children the freedom to move, create, and discover something new in a welcoming environment. It is also a wonderful way for parents to step inside the studio, meet our staff, and experience the culture for themselves.
We believe dance should feel accessible. It should feel encouraging. It should feel like something your child can grow into, not something they have to be perfect at on day one.
For returning dancers, summer is an opportunity to stay strong and continue building technique. For new families, it is simply a starting place. A chance to try. A chance to see if this could become part of your rhythm.
What we consistently see is that when children are given the space to explore, they often discover more than a class. They find confidence. They find friendships. They find a place where they feel known.
If dance has ever been on your mind, summer is the perfect time to take that first step.
Our full summer schedule is now available, and fall registration is open as well. We invite you to explore the options, try a class or workshop, and see what might begin with just one experience.
